home for the holidays

November 27, 2018

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving last week. I had the pleasure of enjoying the day with my mom, husband and best friends on a trip we took to Pittsburgh for the long weekend. Being there reminded me of my roots and starting Ascent Soy Candles back in late 2013. It was around this time of year, 5 years ago, that I decided to get some items to make small batches of candles for my closest family members and friends - and, of course, for myself!

My budget is always tight for Christmas, especially because I have so many people I consider important. What's more is that I've never been the best at gift-giving in terms of spending a lot of money, but I do always try to make something thoughtful and from the heart. I poured the soy wax into decorative Christmas mugs, adorned them with sheer sparkly ribbon, and added "gift tags" to each one with a personalized message for each person. I remember being so happy that I was able to make everyone I loved something that year, all for about $6 per person.

Shortly after the Christmas season in 2013, I started getting requests for more candles. I began to do more research about the ingredients and fragrances that I wanted to use in my products. I even created the name "ascent" and printed the name and candle fragrances on circular paper labels, which I stuck to the top of my candle lids. As you can see, it wasn't long before I started to take the whole thing much more seriously.

Most people probably wouldn't believe that I have still never actually paid myself for my labor. I just enjoy being creative and expressing my artistic side whenever I get the chance to do so, and this passion project of mine is the ideal outlet for me. In fact, the title "ascent" had a lot to do with helping to uplift myself from the stresses of everyday life - not to mention that it was also a nice little pun.

Anyway, I just want to say that I'm thankful for you and I appreciate your business! It helps keep my artistic passion alive and a sense of purpose, outside of my day-to-day.
